Taking the "Special" Out of Special Teams

Anyone else feel that the XFL probably was 10 years ahead of its time?  Remember their big thing, besides SWEET names like "He Hate Me", was a much more laid back approach to hitting.  If I recall, there was no fair catch even!  As the year's ticked by the NFL cracked down more and more on heavy hitting and this past year we all witnessed SO many clean and beautifully timed hits result in flags and subsequent fines for the players.  Luckily, the new "Just for OT in the playoffs" rule where both teams have to touch the ball in some fashion before the game could be over did NOT come into play and ruin a team's season, but it will, it's inevitable and the worst rule change the NFL has ever enacted.

Then just today the owners voted to move the kick-off from the 30 yard line up to the 35 saying they have to protect the players and too many concussions were happening on kick-offs.  This is such a horrible rule change and it flat out punishes teams that have exceptional special teams and special teams players like Devin Hester and Leon Washington.  Leon called it like it is on the radio today saying (essentially) that the owners want to diminish the value of special teams talent, including the exceptional cover guys out there and this rule will result in a ton more touchbacks, thus making specialty return and cover guys much less valuable and therefore less expensive to pay, period.

Kickoffs are one of the most exciting parts of the game.  A big return to answer a team's score.  A jarring hit, causing a fumble and recovery by the kicking team deep in the opposition's territory, or even cheering your kicker on BIG TIME when you see the receiver taking a knee 4 yards deep in their own endzone!  The bottom line is this.  This rule strips away a big part of the specialty that is "special teams" and will result in a much bigger percentage of plays ending on bended knee.  I don't know about you, but I'm pretty ready for the XFL these days.  Vince and Linda, are you guys listening?
